My Chiropractic Foundation

I visited a chiropractor for my first time when I was 25 years old.  After seeing Dr. Arthur Berman for that visit, my life has never been the same.  At that time, I was working as a laborer in a metal working shop that made industrial valves.  I cleaned out metal lathes and CNC machines, and swept a lot of floors.  I found myself with an injured, and very sore right shoulder – so I went to see Arthur, a friend of some friends.

Having bounced around from school to work, and back to school, I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life.  Before Arthur began treatment for me that day, he taught me some ideas about chiropractic philosophy.  I finally figured out what I wanted to be when I grew up!

What I learned that changed the direction of my life was this:  Chiropractic philosophy teaches that there is a Universal Intelligence that exists throughout the entire universe, and it creates and sustain all matter in existence.  What!  And not only that: This Universal Intelligence has a unique expression in living things, and chiropractors call this Innate Intelligence.   This infinite and perfect intelligence exists within all living things, creating and sustaining them in existence.

Here is what makes this so compelling.  Chiropractic philosophy uses the concept of Innate Intelligence to define health.  Here’s how this work:

100% Expression of Innate Intelligence = 100% expression of Health

In other words – If Life expresses itself fully, the way it is meant to, then the result is Health.  Health is our natural and complete expression of Life.  Disease and illness is the result of something interfering with the natural expression of life. Why did I find this so compelling?  There are a couple of reasons.  First, it has been my experience that there is something infinite and perfect at the root of all existence, so this concept resonated with my personal experience and belief.  Secondly, I found it fascinating that a health care profession based its practice on a metaphysical concept, the idea of a higher power.  Somehow this seemed more enlightened than traditional western medicine.

Chiropractic Philosophy is really a subset of a broader Philosophical area of study, known as Vitalism.  If you’re interested in some heady reading about Vitalism, tap this link.

The last piece of this puzzle needs to be filled in.  In other words, how on earth do these concepts of Innate and Universal intelligence relate to the practice of chiropractic?  Here is how that works: Your spine houses the spinal cord.  The spinal cord is the information super-highway between your brain and your body:  The brain, spinal cord and nervous system are the main tools that your Innate Intelligence uses to keep you healthy, to keep you in existence.

If your spine is out of alignment, it causes and short circuit between your brain and your body.  A misaligned spine interferes with the ability of Innate Intelligence to express itself fully in your body.  The result is a loss of health.

Simple.  Really.

After that first visit to the chiropractor, I knew what my destiny was to be.  Chiropractic was my calling.  The ability to serve patients, through allowing them to be fully connected with their Innate expression of health.  After almost 32 years in practice, I am more excited and more convinced about the power of the chiropractic adjustment, and each individual’s ability to heal themselves.
